Celebrating National Yoga Month

National Yoga Month is a free online, community yoga class through the collaboration of Sorenson and Deafhood Yoga. Both Sorenson and Deafhood Yoga have the same fundamental belief in giving back to our Deaf communities, worldwide.

National Yoga Month offers a taste of what a full whole yoga practice includes. This includes an introduction to Pranayama, Relaxation, Asanas, Lifestyle, and Meditation (PRALM) which are the 5 Petals of Life as learned in our Blossom 1 course. Yoga is also known as a flower. We are like flowers that need nutrients, self-care to support our inner ecosystem in order to support our world ecosystem. Each Petal of Life provides a life skill that supports the foundation of our whole being.

Especially with the current climate of Covid-19 and BLM. Everyone experienced a chaotic transition from regular daily routine to unprecedented and a stressful new normal. And Covid-19, is a respiratory illness. Thus Deafhood Yoga offers tools to our Deaf communities such as Pranayama (breathing techniques) to reduce stress and enhance self care and mental health during these challenging times we all face nowadays.

As a result of this timeless practice, our inner love and light radiates.

Why Practice Yoga During the COVID-19 Outbreak?

Since limiting face-to-face contact is the best way to reduce the spread of COVID-19, people around the country (and globe) are staying indoors.

Both exercise and mindfulness meditation have been shown to help reduce feelings of anxiety. Yoga is the perfect solution, as this stress-reduction technique has been shown to:

  • Increase physical activity

  • Inspire a healthier diet

  • Improve sleep quality

  • Reduce stress levels

  • Reduce motivation to drink and smoke

  • Reduce the cortisol, “the stress hormone”

The best part is, there are many styles of yoga, ranging from high-activity to relaxing options. Regardless of your level of experience, you can get started.

Here are what other leading institutions share about how yoga benefits us during the pandemic and beyond.

Yoga can be a powerful tool to deal with the lockdown’s uncertainty and isolation, as well as to maintain physical well-being. During lockdown and in its aftermath, an increasing number of practitioners have turned to online yoga classes to regain balance and strength. It shows the growing importance of yoga to post-COVID-19 wellbeing.

Yoga offers physical and mental health benefits for people of all ages. And, if you’re going through an illness, recovering from surgery or living with a chronic condition, yoga can become an integral part of your treatment and potentially hasten healing.

Johns Hopkins Hospital supports yoga

Addressing the nation on this day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, "Yoga boosts the immune system of the body. You must include Pranayama in your daily life. Pranayama Yoga or breathing exercises, strengthens our respiratory system. It is more relevant in the current times as it is the respiratory system of the body that is most adversely affected by the COVID-19."
